Massachusetts Officials Development Program Kicks Off 2026 with Successful Level 1 & Level 2 Workshop

Massachusetts Ice Hockey Officiating officially kicked off 2026 with the first of three Level 1 and Level 2 Officiating Development Workshops, held January 10–11 at Lovell Arena in Rockland. The two-day camp brought together nearly 20 Massachusetts-based officials for an immersive learning experience designed to bridge the gap between classroom education and real on-ice application.
This workshop was specifically created for USA Hockey–registered Level 1 and Level 2 officials—particularly those who have not yet had the opportunity to receive structured on-ice instruction or work live games. The goal was simple: build a strong foundation, reinforce core officiating principles, and then immediately apply those skills in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Each day followed a deliberate progression. Officials began with classroom sessions focused on positioning, responsibilities, and game management philosophy before heading onto the ice to apply those concepts during two hours of skill-based instruction. After lunch, participants took part in live games, where they were shadowed by veteran referees who provided real-time feedback, guidance, and mentorship.
The workshop’s philosophy emphasized learning first, execution second—allowing newer officials to gain confidence, ask questions, and develop consistency without the pressure often associated with early game assignments. For many attendees, this marked their first meaningful on-ice experience officiating games.
Quote from Gene Binda, Founder of Ref’s Crease
“Workshops like this are critical to the future of officiating. Giving young officials the chance to learn in the classroom, apply those lessons on the ice, and receive immediate feedback from experienced referees builds confidence and accelerates development. We’re proud to support Massachusetts Hockey and be part of a program that invests in education, mentorship, and the next generation of officials.”
This event marks the first of three officiating development workshops planned for the year and sets the tone for continued growth within the Massachusetts officiating community. The program was made possible through the support of Massachusetts Hockey, with funding assistance from a Massachusetts Hockey grant, and additional support from Ref’s Crease.
As the first officiating camp of 2026, the weekend represented an important step in developing and retaining young officials across the state—and reaffirmed the commitment to education, mentorship, and long-term success.
