The recent Winter Olympics gave hockey fans around the world plenty to cheer for, and the New England hockey community has even more reason to be proud. Not only did Team USA take home gold in both the men’s and women’s tournaments, but two officials with strong ties to Referee’s Crease were on the ice for those historic games: Chris Rooney and Kelly Cooke.
A Historic Moment for Officials Chris Rooney, NHL veteran and South Boston native, officiated the men’s gold medal game between the USA and Canada. With a 27-year NHL career that includes eight Stanley Cup Finals and over 1,500 games officiated — including a milestone game at TD Garden just last year — Rooney brought experience, skill, and leadership to the Olympic stage.
Kelly Cooke, highlighted in our Standout Stripes series, and a guest on Chirping Zebras Podcast worked the women’s gold medal game. Kelly’s journey from youth leagues to Princeton University, Division 1 women’s hockey, and ultimately the Olympic Games reflects dedication, resilience, and a commitment to growth.
She also made history officiating the first all-female crew at the Division 1 Women’s National Championship in 2019.
Inspiration for the Next Generation
Seeing officials like Kelly and Chris on the world’s biggest stage is a powerful reminder: hard work, preparation, and dedication open doors. Attending development camps, putting in the reps, and embracing learning opportunities can lead to incredible experiences — from youth rinks to Olympic ice.
Their achievements are proof that consistent effort and a love for the game can create opportunities that few imagine, and they serve as role models for officials at every level.
Continuing the Journey
At Referee’s Crease, we are proud of both Kelly and Chris for representing the organization and the New England hockey community with excellence. We are inspired by their dedication and the path they’ve paved for other officials.
For those looking to advance their officiating careers, our upcoming NCDC Combine and other development camps offer chances to gain experience, refine skills, and continue the journey toward opportunities like those Kelly and Chris achieved. Follow us on social media for announcements about upcoming camps and development programs.
The Olympic stage reminds us that hockey is more than just a game — it’s a community, a challenge, and an opportunity to grow. Let this inspire every player, coach, and official to pursue excellence, put in the work, and never stop striving for the next level.
